Seek His Face – Lessons from a Dog

Have you ever tried to keep a dog from licking you?

My little Shaka follows me around the house. She goes wherever I go. She starts off the nights in her own little bed. By morning, she’s snuck in between my husband and I, remaining low in the bed, waiting for us to awake. She knows I don’t allow her to lick my face, but when I wake up and roll over, she inches up excitedly to my shoulders and the fact that she wants to lick me something awful spills out of her little fuzzy body.

Shaka "The Shadow" Edgar

This morning, I stroked her head as she licked her own lips to pacify her urge to try to lick me. “I know you love me, Shaka. You do a good job showing me you love me.”

Those words began to play in my mind. Her eagerness to be with me. Her adoration and love oozing out.

I opened my Bible not too many minutes later and found myself reading in 1 Chronicles. It was chapter 16. These words of thanks to the LORD are found from verses 8 – 11:

Give praise to the LORD, proclaim his name;

make known among the nations what he has done.

 Sing to him, sing praise to him;

tell of all his wonderful acts.

Glory in his holy name;

let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.

Look to the LORD and his strength;

seek his face always.

Seek His face always – with eagerness, with adoration, with desperation to express love for Him.

Doesn’t matter where you’ve been or how long it’s been since you sought His face. David had just come off  a few months of retreating after he’d led Israel in a failed attempt to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. But joy, exuberance, praise and dancing burst out of him here. He couldn’t stay away from His Lord or from showing His love and devotion.

Seek His face now. Won’t you go to 1 Chronicles and read the rest of the words found there? Verses 8 – 36.

Go seek His face!

    Like Shaka we were all street dogs once. To have someone save us from the “mean streets” should be one of the greatest reasons to praise, adore, and worship our Lord and Savior.

  2. Love this Jeanette – at the end of 2011, the Lord impressed on my that he wanted me to focus this year on “SEEKING HIM WITH ALL MY HEART.” I do better some days than others, but appreciated the picture you painted above of your sweet little dog, waiting, eagerly to spend time with you…and gaining your full attention. Jer. 29:12 tells us “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Love that!! Have a wonderfully blessed day, my friend.

    Oh the things I’ve learned from my dog! May I be so excited to spend time with my heavenly Father!!
